Gaby Lopez capped off a strong opening round at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G with six birdies, posting a 5-under-par 66 to position herself near the top of the leaderboard at Pinnacle Country Club.
Lopez, a former University of Arkansas star playing on familiar turf, fired an opening-round score anchored by six birdies against a single bogey. Starting her day on the 10th tee, she closed out her opening nine in style with birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18.
"It was a solid round," Lopez said following her performance. "I would say that I was rolling my putts very well. I think the golf course is set up probably in a little different way than other years, and it's great."
The Mexican standout felt right at home on the familiar course layout at Pinnacle Country Club, leveraging her local connection and the supportive crowd.
"I love the atmosphere here," Lopez noted. "I love the community. It's a home game for me and I just love playing at Pinnacle."
Despite the course conditions presenting subtle changes compared with past editions, Lopez adapted quickly, navigating softer putting surfaces that required careful control on approach shots.
"Especially the greens are always soft so you just have to be aware of the spin," she said. "When you hit your wedges it can spin back quite a bit. I'm honestly very happy with how the golf course is playing. The temperature dropped so that's also a bonus for us."
Statistically, Lopez delivered a steady ball-striking display throughout the day. She hit 9 of 13 fairways and hit 11 of 18 greens in regulation, while successfully recovering on 2 of 3 sand-save opportunities.
The strong start continues an impressive run of consistency for Lopez this LPGA Tour season. She has successfully made the cut in 12 of her 14 starts on the year, highlighted by three top-10 finishes. Her top results so far include a tie for second at the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally, a tie for third at the Mizuho Americas Open, and a tie for fifth at the Fortinet Founders Cup.
With the tournament expected to feature plenty of scoring opportunities across the field, keeping up the aggressive pace will be crucial as play continues into the weekend. For Lopez, carrying momentum from her late birdie barrage on Friday provides an ideal foundation as she chases another title on familiar ground.
