The build-up is over, as matches finally got underway at the 16th Presidents Cup. Thursday's opening session paired Captain Brandt Snedeker's U.S. Team against Geoff Ogilvy's International squad in five Four-ball matches at Medinah Country Club, Course No. 3, located just outside Chicago.
The U.S. Team has dominated this event, winning the past 10 editions and entering the week with a 13-1-1 record. The Internationals seek their first outright Presidents Cup win since their lone victory in 1998, with a tie in 2003 being the only other blemish on the Americans' record.
Thirty points are up for grabs across the four days and five sessions, with the first team to 15.5 points claiming the prize. Snedeker elected to lead off with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler paired with close friend Sam Burns, a duo with a modest record. The two are 0-3-1 together in prior Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup action, and Scheffler carries a 6-11-4 record overall in team match play despite his individual dominance the last five years.
Later, in Thursday's third match, 21-year-old Jackson Koivun made his Presidents Cup debut alongside veteran Justin Thomas, who's playing in his fourth career Presidents Cup.
