Defending champion Michael Kim may have been playing a different course than the one he claimed his FedEx Open de France title, but that didn't seem to matter.
The American opened with a bogey-free 63 around his first trip at Le Golf National to open up a two shot lead after the first round.
In the build up to his defence he admitted that some of the shots over water on the back nine were "Intimidating" but he did not look to be overawed as he made eight birdies and surged to the top of the early leaderboard.
"Just a dream start," he said afterwards. "All parts of my game were really good, especially my irons and my putting.
"I couldn't have asked for a better start."

Rudy Sautron has flown over 4,000 miles from the University of Tennessee to play at his national open this week but he is still nearly 6,000 miles from home. The 21-year-old hails from La Réunion, an island east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean which has an area of less than 1,000 square miles and a population of less than a million. A Department of France, it is so far away from the capital that the flight from Paris to Saint-Denis is the longest domestic flight on earth at 5,800 miles and just under 12 hours. His first ever round on the DP World Tour may not have gone quite to plan but he did have something to celebrate with this putt on the third - not quite 6,000 miles but a long one nonetheless.
