Marcel Siem has described his decision to withdraw from Final Stage Qualifying School this week as one of the “toughest decisions” he has made in his career.

The six-time DP World Tour winner took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce his decision, explaining that he has been hampered by back pain since the 2025 Irish Open.

Siem said that he knows he is making the correct decision, despite the disappointment of not being able to try and regain his DP World Tour card.

“Ever since the Irish Open last year, I’ve been struggling with back problems and ongoing pain,” the German said. “Some weeks were better than others, but the truth is I haven’t played a single event completely pain-free since then.

“So I’ve decided to make one of the toughest decisions I’ve faced in a long time. I’ve decided to withdraw from this year’s Qualifying School.

“It’s not an easy decision, but I know it’s the right one. My priority now is to finally give my back the rest, treatment and time it needs, followed by a proper rehabilitation and build-up phase.”

Since his debut in 1998, Siem has made an incredible 594 starts on the DP World Tour, amassing six wins and over 50 other top ten finishes in that time.

His most recent win came in 2024 at the Italian Open presented by Regione Emilia-Romagna, where he was victorious via a play-off over Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin.

But the back pain that Siem has since faced has seen his form worsen; although he was able to register three top tens in 2025 and finish just inside the top 100 on the Race to Dubai, the 2026 season saw him make just 12 cuts out of 26, with no top tens, and a 137th place finish in the Rankings.

But the 46-year-old says his motivation hasn’t left him, and that he will be able to return to the top level of professional golf following the necessary rehabilitation.

“Over the past few weeks, I’ve had many conversations with my medical team, and they’ve given me a lot of confidence that, with the right approach and enough time, I can overcome this and return to competing at my very best. And that’s exactly what I intend to do.

“If there’s one thing my career has taught me, it’s how to get back up, keep fighting and never give up. I’ve done it before, and I’m ready to do it again! I already can’t wait to get back out there, compete and see all of you on the course again.

“I’m incredibly motivated for what’s ahead and truly believe there’s still a lot of great golf left in me.”
