For Marco Penge, 2026 has proven a challenging year of change but he is re-energised as he makes his first defence of a DP World Tour title at the Open de España presented by Madrid.

The Englishman enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025, claiming a hat-trick of titles in China, Denmark and Spain on his way to a second-place finish on the Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World before he later won the Seve Ballesteros Award as the Player of the Year.

Since earning dual membership on the PGA Tour for this year, Penge has furthered his career development stateside but recurring health issues halted his progress and he was forced to withdraw from the U.S. Open in June.

While adjusting to a new norm, he and his wife, Sophie, welcomed their second child, Romeo, in February too and the 28-year-old has balanced his drive to retain his PGA Tour playing rights for next season while still displaying his commitment to playing on the DP World Tour.

As such, after not defending his title at the Hainan Classic presented by MAEXTRO and the Danish Golf Championship, his return to the Spanish capital comes as a welcome source of familiarity.

"It's been tough to be fair," said Penge of his year.

"I've enjoyed it, but it's so much change. A lot of change at one time, not just in my golfing career, but my personal life as well, and kind of quite a lot for a 28-year-old to deal with.

"But I feel like I've dealt with it pretty well. I feel like my golf game's been probably a lot better than it showed results-wise.

"I've kind of come back to Europe and played really well when I have come back, so that's promising. I'm just trying to find my feet [in the United States]. I think that takes some time.

"It took me a year out here on the DP World Tour when I was in that similar position. So yeah, it's been fun."

Despite all the new and unsettling elements he has faced this year, Penge has performed to a high standard and arrives in Spain on the back of the latest of four worldwide top-ten finishes at the PGA Tour's Bank of Utah Championship on Sunday.

Since returning to action after a seven-week absence at the BMW International Open in Germany in July, the 2023 HotelPlanner Tour Road to Mallorca Rankings winner has made eight of nine cuts.

In that period, he has another top ten at the Husqvarna British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo and is relishing being back in an environment where he feels most at home after 16 hours of travel from Utah and a nine-hour time difference.

"I found it really hard with one child, let alone two, my health not being great, and then moving to America to a new tour and not being with my friends week in, week out," he added.

"Just had to kind of brainstorm a lot of things and try and find some solutions to a couple of problems that I may be having.

"In the grand scheme of things, my life's pretty good. It's not really a big problem, is it? It's just a game of golf and I'm lucky to be doing what I'm doing and I'm lucky to have the life I have and two healthy kids."

Last year, Penge beat fellow Englishman Daniel Brown in a play-off to become a winner of one of the DP World Tour's most historic events.

In doing so, he also gained an invite to the Masters Tournament and a spot in the field at The 155th Open, with those exemptions again on offer to this week's winner and leading finisher at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

Joined by a host of Major champions including Race to Dubai leader Patrick Reed, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose, Penge is among a star-studded field that is competing to win the title.

Recalling the memories of his victory, he said: "Kind of feels a bit like a blur and I said to my manager when I was coming in this morning, I feel like this is kind of the first time I'm starting to realise what I actually achieved.

"It's such a big tournament. I think in the moment I didn't actually realise what I'd done and how big it actually is. So yeah, you see the field this year, outside of the Rolex Series events, it's probably the best field that the DP World Tour has had and that's great to see."
