Eugenio Chacarra fractured his toe in a freak accident last week, with a midnight trip for water sending the three-time DP World Tour winner to the physio just days before the start of his national open.
Twice a winner this season, the 26-year-old played through the pain barrier though and opened with a five-under-par 66 to hold a share of the lead.
Victory this week, coupled with a missed cut for Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World leader Patrick Reed would see Chacarra hit the front in the battle to win the Harry Vardon Trophy.
But despite thrilling the home crowds, he was weighing up his options as he looks to ensure he doesn't make things worse ahead of the run-in to the DP World Tour season.
"It doesn’t really hurt when I’m swinging," he said. "That’s the only good thing. It’s why I can still make a score, but it’s just been really tough to walk.
"I made it through today but the pain I had [over] the last holes walking is something that I don’t know if it’s worth it because I’ve got a lot to play for in the next couple of weeks.
"So, I’ll just sit down with the team and see what we decide because it was tough."

Joining Chacarra at the top of the leaderboard late in the day were Connor Syme and Grant Forrest.
Syme has missed the cut in three of his four appearances at this event, but he got off to a fast start with five birdies on his front nine after starting at the tenth.
Among the afternoon starters, who found the going tougher in the sunny but breezy conditions, he mixed a birdie at the fourth with a lone bogey at the eighth to card his 66.
With his wife, Alanis, expecting their first child soon, last year's KLM Open winner is hoping a relaxed mindset can result in a strong finish to an inconsistent season.
"There's a lot of pride involved," he said. "Obviously not happy with where I am [on the Race to Dubai Rankings], even though it has been a difficult season, but I know how quickly things can change in this game.
"I've been on the receiving end of that a few times and sometimes it just takes a little bit of something, and you never know."

Meanwhile, Forrest has either missed the cut or retired through injury at each of his last five starts on the DP World Tour.
But a return to a venue where he has two top-five finishes over the last five years proved a welcome boost as he also impressed late in the day.
The two-time DP World Tour winner mixed seven birdies with two bogeys and could have taken the solo lead but for a missed birdie putt from nine feet at the par-three ninth hole.
"It's a different Club de Campo to what we're used to, playing so soft but quite breezy this afternoon, and [with] some tough holes," he said.
"I drove the ball really well, which made life a lot easier, and then just scored nicely, and I felt like a round like this had been coming over the past few weeks. Managed to make a few putts and I’m delighted for the day's work."

2026 will be a year that Daniel Hillier will forever remember.
It all began with two top-five finishes in his first three starts in the Middle East during the International Swing.
Then, in late February, the New Zealander married his longtime partner, Siobhan, before winning his national open just days later.
And he now has a first hole-in-one on the DP World Tour, earning a new BMW iX5 in the process worth €140,000.

Coming into the week 13th in the Race to Dubai Rankings Delivered by DP World, the 28-year-old will hope there's more yet to come over the final events of the campaign as he bids to secure dual membership on the PGA Tour next year.
"[The year] just keeps getting better," he said as he reflected on holing his tee shot at the par-three 17th with an eight iron.
"Hopefully I can continue that for another couple of months."
Marco Penge is known as one of the longest hitters on the DP World Tour, but even the best don't always get it right.
Defending his title in Spain this week after a 12-hour flight from Utah in the United States and a nine-hour time difference, the Englishman was perhaps understandbly not firing on all cylinders as he opened with a two-over-par 73.
At the seventh, the three-time DP World Tour winner suffered a moment amateurs are all too familiar with as he topped his drive.

But after missing out defending his titles in China and Denmark earlier in the season, the dual member was still enjoying being back in the Spanish capital as he teed it up alongside a pair of Major champions.
"I wasn't going to miss this week, I didn't want to miss this one," he said. "Especially a national open, playing with Justin [Rose] and Sergio [Garcia].
"This is definitely my favourite [win], it's nice to come back and relive those memories."
