The DP World Tour will return to Portuguese shores in 2027, with the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisboa to be staged at Oitavos Dunes Links Golf from May 13-16.
The tournament will mark the first DP World Tour event to the country in five years, following the last edition of the Portugal Masters in 2022, and the fifth time the venue has hosted a competition on golf’s global Tour.
The 2027 edition will also signify the start of a three-year commitment, securing the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisboa’s place on the DP World Tour schedule through to 2029.
One of European golf’s oldest national opens, the Open de Portugal dates back to 1953 and first featured on golf’s global Tour in 1973. It was last played as a dual-ranked DP World Tour and European Challenge Tour, now HotelPlanner Tour, event in 2020, and has featured solely on the latter circuit in the years since.
Now in a new era, the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisboa will welcome visitors from near and far, as the tournament aims to go beyond the fairways and combine world-class golf, hospitality, gastronomy, entertainment and experiences, further showcasing the region as one of the leading destinations on the international golf calendar.
The Open de Portugal’s return to the Race to Dubai comes through the combined support of Turismo de Portugal, Câmara Municipal de Cascais, Associação Turismo de Lisboa, Entidade Regional de Turismo da Região de Lisboa and Federação Portuguesa de Golfe.
Ben Cowen, the DP World Tour’s Chief Tournament and Operations Officer, said:
“We are delighted to be returning to Portugal, for what will be a fantastic addition to our global schedule. To be able to once again stage a national open on Portuguese shores, highlighting the country’s rich golfing history and heritage, is something we’re really proud of.”
“The return of the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisboa has only been made possible thanks to the combined support of Portugal’s governing tourism bodies - national, regional and local - with the incredible support of the Federação Portuguesa de Golfe. We look forward to our continued work together, and welcoming fans from near and far to Cascais next year.”
Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, said:
“The return of the DP World Tour to Portugal, following the last edition of the Portugal Masters in 2022, reinforces the country’s position as one of the world’s leading golf destinations. An event of this scale helps showcase the Portugal brand in strategic markets, increase international awareness and strengthen the destination’s appeal, while supporting tourism activity throughout the year.”
Nuno Piteira Lopes, Mayor of Cascais, said:
“In Cascais, we are about more than hosting major events – we host the very best, those that leave a lasting mark on the destination and in the memories of those who experience them. That is why we are delighted to welcome back the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisboa.”
“We want the world’s best golfers to find much more here than a great golf course. We want them to experience the identity, hospitality and quality of life of Cascais, where sport is lived, shared and open to everyone.”
António Valle, Director General of Associação Turismo de Lisboa, said:
“In Lisbon and Cascais, golf offers a unique way to experience the destination: between the Atlantic and the city, outstanding golf courses and a culture of authenticity, where heritage, gastronomy and lifestyle come together. The Open de Portugal provides an exceptional international showcase for this unique experience, raising the visibility of Lisbon and Cascais among a global audience and strengthening their position among Europe’s most desirable golf destinations.”
Carla Salsinha, President of the Executive Committee of Entidade Regional de Turismo da Região de Lisboa, said:
“The return of the Open de Portugal to the DP World Tour represents an opportunity to strengthen the contribution major sporting events make to the tourism economy of the Lisbon Region. Through its ability to attract visitors, generate overnight stays and create activity across the destination, the tournament adds value to the region’s tourism offering and contributes to a sustainable growth strategy capable of generating impact beyond the days of competition.”
Pedro Nunes Pedro, President of Federação Portuguesa de Golfe, said:
“The return of the Open de Portugal to the DP World Tour is a truly significant moment for Portuguese golf and one that deserves to be celebrated with pride by everyone. Since 1953, this event has been part of the history of our game, and it now returns Portugal to the highest level, connecting our legacy with the future we are building.”
“It is a unique opportunity for our professionals to compete at the highest level and to inspire new generations to dream even bigger.”
The Open de Portugal was first hosted at Penina Golf Club on the Algarve, with the tournament having since been played at 14 different courses around the country. Its return to Oitavos Dunes Links Golf, set within one of the most iconic landscapes on the Portuguese coast between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains, follows four previous editions held in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The Open de Portugal’s honour roll includes some of European golf’s most recognisable names, including Colin Montgomerie, Thomas Bjørn, Sam Torrance, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Howard Clark and Mark McNulty.
Garrick Higgo was the last winner of the event, the South African prevailing by one stroke over Spain’s Pep Angles at Royal Óbidos in 2020.
Further information on tickets, hospitality and the programme for the Open de Portugal | Cascais-Lisboa 2027 will be announced in the coming months.
