With only a few events remaining in the LPGA Tour season, every shot carries added weight for players fighting to secure their spot in the season-ending finale. At the Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, Julia Lopez Ramirez and Pauline Roussin-Bouchard have put themselves in prime position through 36 holes, entering the weekend tied for second place at 11-under 133.

Defending champion Miyu Yamashita leads the field at 13-under par following rounds of 65 and 66. Just two strokes behind, Lopez Ramirez and Roussin-Bouchard are capitalizing on crucial weeks as both have an eye on the making the field in the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.

The Race to the CME Globe is the season-long points competition where only the top 60 players gain entry into the $11 million CME Group Tour Championship, which features a historic $4 million winner's payout. For players outside the top 60, late-season Asian swing events offer a vital opportunity to leapfrog into contention.

Lopez Ramirez, who entered the week ranked No. 66 in the Race to the CME Globe standings, backed up her opening-round 67 with a 6-under 66 on Friday. The 2026 European Solheim Cup star displayed blistering iron play throughout her second round, collecting eight birdies against a single double bogey on the par-4 ninth. Through two rounds, she leads the tournament field with 15 total birdies.

"Yeah, feel like my irons was going really well and like my birdies were all into like six feet, so I think that's what made the round go really well," Lopez Ramirez said following her second round. "I'm driving it really well. Being in the fairways and hitting irons really well kind of makes the score out here. So it's just be patient with the weather. It can be quite hot. It can get your mind out of it sometimes."

Lopez Ramirez hit 12 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in regulation during Friday's round, demonstrating precision on a course where approach shots dictate scoring opportunities. Coming off a T11 finish at the BMW Ladies Championship in Republic of Korea, the Spaniard continues her late-season surge.

Sharing second place with Lopez Ramirez is France’s Roussin-Bouchard, who followed up her opening 64 with a 3-under 69 on Friday. Sitting at No. 79 in the Race to the CME Globe standings, Roussin-Bouchard has put together a historic opening 36 holes. Her 133 total marks her lowest 36-hole score on the LPGA Tour, surpassing her previous best of 135 set at the 2023 Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship.

Roussin-Bouchard stands out as the only player in the field who has not recorded a bogey or worse through 36 holes, going flawless back-to-back rounds while going a perfect 3-for-3 in sand saves during Friday's action. The strong showing marks a dramatic turnaround from her appearance at this event in 2025, where she finished T60 after struggling with an 80 in her second round before rebounding with a final-round 66.

Looking to build on a season where she has made 11 cuts in 23 starts, including a season-best tied for third at the HSBC Women's World Championship in February, Roussin-Bouchard credited her short game and mindset for keeping her score clean.

"Today was all about that. The few putts that I made were mostly for pars, so those were definitely clutch," Roussin-Bouchard said after her round. "I think it's like trying to just do pretty much the same thing and maybe just roll a few more putts in. But no, same mindset. Keeping the thoughts in the right place and that's pretty much it.

“I try not to think about it because then everything become precious and you try to do [too much] and waste shots. So I'm more in that mindset more than like -- if there is a few drops, I'm perfectly fine with it if it's a birdie that comes after that."

With two rounds remaining, both Lopez Ramirez and Roussin-Bouchard remain squarely in contention for a breakthrough LPGA Tour victory while making major moves toward securing their spots in the season finale. Third-round play continues Saturday morning at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
