France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard put herself in contention for a career-defining breakthrough Saturday, firing a 5-under-par 67 in the third round of the Maybank Championship to sit two shots off the lead.
The 26-year-old stands tied for second place at 16-under 200 through 54 holes alongside People’s Republic of China's Yan Liu, trailing defending champion and leader Miyu Yamashita by two strokes. The total marks Roussin-Bouchard's lowest 54-hole score on the LPGA Tour, eclipsing her previous best of 204 set at the 2022 LPGA Drive On Championship. Roussin-Bouchard delivered a balanced performance on Saturday, hitting 9 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation while needing just 27 putts.
"I can definitely feel it's the third round in the heat, and also like, I don't know, there was a bit more action on my end, a bit more bogeys," Roussin-Bouchard said. "I don't mind it if it means more birdies like I was saying yesterday, but overall same mindset and trying to like keep my thoughts together, and if they start wandering, just bring them back to the right place."
Experience will be key as she chases the lead during Sunday's final round. Having been in contention on tour before, Roussin-Bouchard noted that past high-pressure situations have prepared her for the moment.
"Well, I've definitely learned my lessons in the past, whether they were really harsh or not," she said. "I just like, look, whatever comes my way I'll be ready to just face it on, and, yeah, same mindset. Nothing is going really be changing. Hopefully I can get more endorphins going for tomorrow and a bit more pumped up because it's so hot."
The strong performance comes at a crucial time in the LPGA Tour calendar. Roussin-Bouchard entered the week ranked No. 79 in the Race to the CME Globe, outside the top 60 players who earn entry into the season-ending $11 million CME Group Tour Championship. With a historic $4 million payout awaiting the winner of the finale, late-season Asian swing events like the Maybank Championship offer a vital springboard for players aiming to leapfrog into contention.
A victory on Sunday would unlock several significant achievements for Roussin-Bouchard. She would become a Rolex First-Time Winner and the fifth player to accomplish the feat this season, joining Gina Kim, Yana Wilson, Yuna Nishimura, and Yuri Yoshida. She would also become the second player from France to win on tour this season, following Celine Boutier, as well as the first French player to win the Maybank Championship. Additionally, a victory would make her the 18th unique winner on the LPGA Tour this year.
Her 54-hole position demonstrates notable progress for Roussin-Bouchard at this venue. At the 2025 event, she finished tied for 60th after recovering from a second-round 80 with a final-round 66. Now within striking distance of her first LPGA victory, she faces 18 final holes to chase down the lead and secure both her maiden title and a spot in the season-ending field.
