Republic of Korea’s Soo Bin Joo closed with a 5-under 67 on Sunday to jump into a tie for eighth place at the Buick LPGA Shanghai, providing a crucial boost as she fights for a spot in the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.
Joo finished at 3-under 285 (73-75-70-67) following a final round at Sheshan International Golf Club, where she made adjustments after three tough days.
"As soon as I got here this week and played the practice round, I knew the golf course is a hard golf course, so I really tried my best to spend time with my caddie talking about the golf course and knowing where to miss it," Joo said. "The first three rounds I wasn't sure where to miss it, I was trying to focus on the goodness shots and I think that lead me to better position on the final round."
The 22-year-old moved up nine spots in the Race to the CME Globe standings, putting her right on the bubble for the 60-player field at Naples, Florida. She has now made 15 cuts in 20 starts this season with three top-10 finishes.
With four tournaments remaining on the LPGA schedule before the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship, including next week's stop in her home country of the Republic of Korea, Joo enters the rest of the Asian swing with renewed confidence.
" I think it'll help me a lot. And, I mean, since Korea is my home base I'm really excited to play in front of the Korea golf fans," Joo said. "Finishing well on Sunday gives me a lot of energy for Korea and the rest of the season as well."
