Lauren Coughlin’s Saturday in the Natural State
Lauren Coughlin had the round of her career Saturday in Arkansas. Teeing off on the 10th hole, Coughlin opened her round with a birdie and followed it up with eight more. Her nine consecutive birdies are the most to open a round in recorded history across both the LPGA Tour and the PGA Tour.
Her raw score of 26 on the back nine is also a record-low raw score. She cooled off on the front, carding a birdie on the third hole and parring the rest. She ended the day with a 10-under-par 61 and jumped 106 spots up the leaderboard for one of the most historic rounds in LPGA Tour history.
Yuna Nishimura Goes Wire-to-Wire for First Win
Yuna Nishimura carded her first win after going wire-to-wire at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. She finished Friday at 8 under with six birdies and an eagle to complete a bogey-free round. She carded another 8-under 63 Saturday with nine birdies and one bogey, extending her lead to a comfortable five strokes heading into Sunday play.
She got off to a slower start Sunday, making the turn at even for the day and sharing the lead with Aki Iwai. She turned it on for the back nine, and the rest was history. She holed out from the bunker on No. 11 for a birdie to regain the solo lead. On the 14th hole, she rolled in a putt for eagle, then followed that with a birdie on the 15th. She birdied the final hole for good measure, notching her first LPGA Tour win by five strokes at 21-under-par. This tied the tournament’s all-time scoring record set by Nasa Hataoka in 2018.
Over the weekend at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G, four players recorded aces: Mao Saigo on the third hole, Benedetta Moresco on the sixth hole, and Nataliya Guseva and Yealimi Noh on the 15th hole. Noh’s ace was caught on camera during Sunday’s round as she made a late charge up the leaderboard, finishing the day at 7 under and the tournament tied for 15th at 12-under-par.
Linn Grant had an incredible par save in the opening round of the Solheim Cup with a hole-out from a greenside bunker on the ninth hole. The shot preserved a 4 up lead for her team, which went on to win the match.
Andrea Lee knocked in one of the longest putts of the Solheim Cup during the opening round. Her 40-foot birdie look hit the back of the cup and took a quick bounce before dropping. Lee claimed the point for her team on the hole.
Maja Stark put on one of the best displays of the Solheim Cup on Saturday. In the morning matches, she found herself chipping from just off the green on the eighth hole. Her chip hit the front of the green and rolled out for eagle, putting her team 3 up in its match.
Stark played again in the afternoon matches and got off to a quick start, holing out from the fairway on the first hole to take an early 1 up lead.
Solheim Cup rookie Auston Kim was looking at an up-and-down to save par on the fourth hole during Saturday four-ball. No putter was needed, however, as she chipped in for birdie to build a 2 up lead.
Leona Maguire brought her signature energy to Saturday's afternoon matches. A chip-in from off the right side of the green captured an eagle for her team, sparking a major fist pump celebration.
On the 10th hole, Celine Boutier converted a birdie attempt from just off the green with a successful chip-in.
Jennifer Kupcho executed the best comeback of the Solheim Cup, claiming a Saturday afternoon match for her team. Facing a long Texas wedge on the 17th hole, she found the perfect line and speed, sinking the putt to win the hole and bring her match back to tied with one hole to play.
She delivered again on the 18th hole, sinking a 40-foot putt to go 1 up and win the match, tying the competition between the U.S. and Europe heading into Sunday singles.
During the opening round of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, Lottie Woad made an effortless chip-in from off the green on No. 17 for birdie.
Andrea Lee closed her second round in Arkansas in a big way, holing out from the fairway on No. 18 for eagle in front of the weekend crowds. Her ball bounced past the hole, hit the upslope behind the green and rolled back down into the cup.
Just a few groups back, Linnea Strom did the same on the 14th hole. Her approach shot from the fairway landed past the hole and spun back into the cup for eagle.
Chanettee Wannasaen made a late-weekend surge up the leaderboard with a final-round 64. One of her eight Sunday birdies came on the 12th hole, where she chipped in from the first cut.
Friday afternoon four-ball at the Solheim Cup nearly yielded an ace. Yealimi Noh struck the flagstick with her tee shot on the par-3 15th hole, then sank the putt to walk off with a birdie.
