01아론 라이, '로리 맥일로이 어워드' 초대 주인공 등극

Aaron Rai celebrated an "extremely special" day as he was presented with the inaugural Rory McIlroy Award ahead of the BMW PGA Championship.
The new annual trophy, named in honour of Europe’s first winner of the career Grand Slam, is presented to the DP World Tour member who cumulatively earns the most Race to Dubai points from the Masters Tournament, US PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open.
Rai made his Major breakthrough in style at the US PGA Championship in May, becoming the first Englishman in 107 years to lift the Wanamaker Trophy after a sublime back nine display at Aronimink Golf Club.
He preceded that memorable week with a 48th place finish in The Masters, followed by tied 11th at the U.S. Open and tied 79th at The Open, for a total of 1876.5 Race to Dubai points across the four events.
The Englishman will play the first two rounds at Wentworth Club alongside the World Number Two but the two were united early on Tuesday for the presentation of the DP World Tour's newest honour.
"It's really special," said Rai. "I think the award having Rory's name is befitting of his stature in the game and it representing achievements in the Major Championships.
"On a personal level it's a really special and huge achievement. They're the four biggest events that we have in the sport and to have an award that's associated with performances in those four events in 2026 means a lot to me.
"Rory is a legend of the modern game and he's got a hell of a long way to go in what he's going to achieve and to be the winner of that award and what it represents means a lot to me.
"He's a player that I've looked up to massively as a kid and having the opportunity to play with him, compete with him, get advice from him as well over the years... to win the inaugural award that has his name on it is extremely special."
The Rory McIlroy Award has taken its place alongside the European Tour group’s four other prestigious annual awards named after players who have made a hugely significant contribution to the sport of golf: Seve Ballesteros, Harry Vardon, Sir Henry Cotton and John Jacobs.
The Seve Ballesteros Award is presented annually to the member voted Players’ Player of the Year and the Harry Vardon Trophy to the Race to Dubai winner, while the Rookie of the Year receives the Sir Henry Cotton Award. The John Jacobs Trophy, named after the European Tour’s Founding Father, is presented to the winner of the Legends Tour Order of Merit.
