Brooke Matthews delivered the highlight of Friday’s second round at the Maybank Championship, holing out for an ace on the fourth hole to headline her 1-under-par 71 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

The 28-year-old American used a 9-iron from 130 yards on the par-3 fourth to record her shot of the day. The spectacular ace marked the 24th hole-in-one on the LPGA Tour this season.

"I hit a solid 9-iron right at it, and it just landed soft and rolled right in," Matthews said following her round.

With the hole-in-one, CME Group will donate $20,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as part of the CME Group Cares Challenge – Score 1 for St. Jude program. Matthews' shot brings the total raised for St. Jude to $480,000 across the LPGA Tour season.

“That’s what really matters, you know. That's so cool that they do that. What we do out here is cool and everything, but the people at St. Jude are doing something that really matter,” Matthews said of the charitable impact. “It's an honor and thank you to CME for donating.”

For Matthews, it was just the second ace of her professional or amateur career. Her first also came on the LPGA Tour during the final round of The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican last season.

Despite the moment of perfection, Matthews endured an eventful scorecard during her second round. Coming off a bogey on the par-5 third hole, the ace provided an immediate spark. Her day ultimately featured the hole-in-one, two birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey.

Statistically, Matthews hit 12 of 14 fairways and reached 12 of 18 greens in regulation, though she found herself scrambling out of the sand, converting just two of four sand saves.

While the ace provided a thrilling moment, Matthews faces an uphill battle over the final stretch of the season as she looks to secure a spot in the field for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.

Entering the week, Matthews sits at No. 86 in the Race to the CME Globe standings. Only the top 60 players and ties following The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican next month will qualify for the season finale and its record purse.

Matthews has faced a challenging campaign, making just nine cuts across 19 starts this year. Her best finish of the season came at the FM Championship, where she tied for ninth, serving as her lone top-10 performance in 2026.

With only a few events remaining on the schedule, Matthews has her work cut out for her to leapfrog 26 spots in the standings. A strong weekend push in Malaysia would provide a crucial boost to her points tally as time runs short to extend her season into late November.
