Chizzy Iwai carded a 6-under 66 on Friday, highlighted by two eagles, to climb to T6 at the BMW Ladies Championship at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea.
The 24-year-old from Japan opened with a 3-under 69 and began the second round T8. She now sits at 9-under 135, four shots behind leader Haeran Ryu, who is 13-under 131. Two rounds, or 36 holes, remain on the par-72 course.
Starting on the first tee, Iwai birdied the par-4 first to move to 4-under overall and added another birdie at the par-4 fifth. The turning point came at the par-5 sixth, where she made eagle to reach 7-under. A birdie at the par-4 ninth completed a front-nine 31 and put her at 8-under.
The back nine brought more movement. A bogey at the par-4 11th dropped Iwai to 7-under, but she answered with a birdie at the par-5 12th. A double bogey at the par-3 15th pushed her back to 6-under, yet she recovered immediately with an eagle at the par-5 17th to return to 8-under. A birdie at the par-4 18th sealed her 35 on the back nine.
Iwai's ball-striking powered the round. She hit 11 of 14 fairways, averaged 250 yards off the tee and reached 16 of 18 greens in regulation. Off the tee is her strength: she ranks 28th in strokes gained off the tee at +0.40 per round.
Iwai won the 2025 Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba for her lone LPGA Tour title which came during her rookie season. This season, she has made 17 cuts in 24 starts and has six top-10 finishes, including a solo second at the Honda LPGA Thailand and a T10 most recently at the LOTTE Championship presented by Hoakalei.
Iwai will try to close the gap on Ryu over the weekend, with 36 holes remaining at Pine Beach.
