Hye-Jin Choi came close once again to securing her long-awaited maiden LPGA Tour title, finishing as the runner-up at the Buick LPGA Shanghai after leading through each of the first three rounds.
The 27-year-old native of the Republic of Korea closed with a 1-under 71 at Sheshan Golf Club, mixing three birdies with two bogeys. Choi mounted a late charge with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole to trim the margin to a single stroke, but local favorite Ruoning Yin saved par to wrap up a four-under 68 and claim a one-shot victory at 11-under. Choi finished alone in second place at 10-under 278.
The setback leaves Choi still searching for her first victory in 124 career LPGA Tour starts as a member, a stat that highlights her consistent presence near the top of leaderboards since earning her membership with a tied-for-eighth finish at the 2021 LPGA Q-Series for the 2022 season.
Choi has now held or shared a 54-hole lead five times in her LPGA Tour career without converting it into a trophy. The Shanghai finish marks her second runner-up performance of the season, following a second-place finish alongside partner Hyo Joo Kim at the Dow Championship.
Despite the missed opportunity in Shanghai, Choi continues to put together a formidable 2026 campaign. She has made 18 cuts in 23 starts this season, racking up five top-10 finishes. Over her short career on the tour, she has collected 34 top-10 finishes. A key figure on the international stage, Choi also represented Republic of Korea at the Hanwha PLUS International Crown in both 2023 and 2025.
Choi will not have to wait long for another shot at breakthrough success. The LPGA Tour’s Asian swing moves next week to her home country for the BMW Ladies Championship in the Republic of Korea, where Choi enters in prime form and with another chance to claim her inaugural LPGA Tour title.
