In the opening round of foursomes on Friday morning, Linn Grant found herself in a greenside bunker on the ninth hole. Her bunker shot came out clean and found a home at the bottom of the cup for a par. She was already 4 up with playing partner Maja Stark, and the par save allowed them to keep their four-hole advantage over Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho.
Also Friday morning, Andrea Lee was looking at a 40-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole. The ball hit the back of the hole and bounced up before falling in. Lee claimed the hole and cut her European competitor’s lead to 1 up.
Auston Kim made her Solheim Cup debut and brought some steady performances. During Friday afternoon’s four-ball matches, she had a birdie opportunity on the sixth hole. She hit a nearly 50-foot lag putt, made birdie and gave her team a 1 up lead.
Lauren Coughlin was paired up with Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda in the afternoon matches on Friday. She had a chance to win a hole on the 11th green and did not disappoint her teammates. Coughlin sank a deep putt for birdie on the par-3, cutting Carlota Ciganda and Julia Lopez Ramirez’s lead to 1 up. They ended up tying the match.
Yealimi Noh stepped up to the 15th tee on Friday afternoon down one against Charley Hull and Lottie Woad. Noh kept her game dialed all day and found the pin with her tee shot. It bounced off and landed just a few feet from the hole. She secured the birdie putt to tie the hole.
Another Solheim Cup rookie, Nastasia Nadaud, got off to a hot start on Saturday morning. She sank a long-range birdie putt on the first hole of the match, going 1 up with teammate Mimi Rhodes.
Stark had quite a week in the Netherlands. On the eighth hole during Saturday foursomes, her tee shot landed just outside a bunker off the front of the green. Stark flew her chip to the front of the green, and it rolled out for an eagle. She went 3 up with teammate Grant.
Leona Maguire found herself in a bunker on the 12th hole Saturday morning, but that didn’t stop her from executing a dialed-in approach. She popped her ball out of the sand with a lofty wedge shot, landing just a foot from the hole. She managed a birdie and tied the match.
Stark could not be stopped on Saturday. On the first hole of afternoon four-ball matches, she had a clear second shot into the green. Her ball took two hops and jumped into the cup for an early 1 up lead.
Kim found herself off the green after her tee shot on the par-3 fourth hole. Her chip shot from the first cut hit the edge of the green and rolled in for birdie. She gave her and teammate Zhang a 2 up lead, never trailing for the entire match.
On the fifth hole, Carlota Ciganda had a long look at birdie and took advantage. Her ball hit the cup with considerable speed before falling in, giving her team its first lead of the match.
Just one hole later, Ciganda had a similar setup. Facing a long birdie attempt on the par-3 sixth hole, she sank the putt again with less speed to put her team to 2 up.
Maguire carried her morning momentum into her Saturday afternoon match. On the eighth hole, her tee shot landed just short of the green. Using a wedge, she flew her shot onto the green and watched it roll out for an eagle. Europe won the hole and cut the U.S. team’s lead to 2.
On the 10th hole, Boutier selected a wedge from just off the green. An easy chip rolled into the cup for a birdie to tie the hole.
Stark meant business on the 15th hole. After a tee shot landed near the flagstick and rolled past, she was left with a birdie putt from the back of the green. Her putt tracked over a shelf and dropped straight into the cup to tie the hole. She and Grant went on to win their match 2&1, making them the only European pairing to win Saturday afternoon.
Kupcho and Lindy Duncan were 1 down heading into the 17th hole on Saturday afternoon. Off the edge of the green, Kupcho used a Texas wedge to attempt one of the longest putts of the week. She found the perfect line and speed, sinking the putt to tie the match with one hole remaining.
Kupcho had another long birdie attempt on the final hole with the same result. Her 40-foot putt dropped, putting the U.S. team 1 up behind her clutch putting. They defeated Ciganda and Ramirez 1 up to tie the competition 8-8 heading into Sunday play.
